What this part does that a standard contactor won't
The LUCL1XFU is a magnetic control unit from the TeSys Ultra family — it's not a bare contactor. It's built specifically for motor control and motor protection duty, with a tripping threshold of 14.2 x Ir (+/- 20%) and utilisation categories AC-41, AC-43, and AC-44 covering resistive, motor, and mixed loads through a VFD or soft-start. That last one is the key: this unit is designed to sit on the line side of a variable-speed drive or soft starter, protecting the motor branch circuit from short circuits and overloads while the drive handles the ramp. Coil voltage is 110-240 V AC or 110-220 V DC, with a drop-out threshold of 55 V on either supply — meaning it holds in through brownouts down to about half nominal, then drops cleanly. Pull-in current hits 280 mA peak on closing; sealed current drops to 25-35 mA depending on the LUB control module paired with it. That 2-3 W heat dissipation in the control circuit is real panel heat to account for in a crowded enclosure.
Mounts via plug-in front face — no tools needed to swap it out of the base, which matters when you're troubleshooting on a live panel and the line is waiting. The body is 45 mm wide, 66 mm tall, 60 mm deep. Rated altitude is 2000 m standard; above that you'll need to derate.
Listed to EN 60947-6-2, IEC 60947-6-2, UL 60947-4-1 (with phase barrier), and CSA C22.2 No 60947-4-1 (with phase barrier). The SELV separation between control/auxiliary and main circuits is rated at 400 V — that means the control wiring can be treated as safe-touch low voltage relative to the power circuit, simplifying panel layout and reducing isolation requirements on the PLC side.
