Motor ratings and what they mean for the drive train
The SH31004P1BF3100 is a three-phase servo motor from the SH3 series, delivering 2.5 kW continuous power. Nominal torque depends on the supply: 9.5 N.m at 230 V single phase, 7.9 N.m at 400 V three phase, and 6.9 N.m at 480 V three phase — so the same motor body covers a range of line voltages, but the torque you get changes with the input. Peak stall torque hits 40.5 N.m across the 115–480 V three-phase range, which tells you the short-term acceleration headroom for rapid moves. The integrated holding brake delivers 12 N.m static torque — enough to hold a vertical axis load at rest without the drive having to maintain current. Brake pull-in power is 18 W, so the DC bus or external 24 V supply needs to budget that draw when the brake releases.
Encoder and feedback — absolute position without a home cycle
The encoder is an absolute multiturn Hiperface DSL type. That means the motor knows its shaft position and the number of full revolutions from power-up — no homing routine needed after a power cycle or a controlled stop. The DSL (Digital Serial Link) protocol runs over a single cable pair, sharing power and data, which simplifies the feedback cable run back to the drive. The torque constant is 1.62 N.m/A at 120 °C winding temperature, and the back EMF constant is 103 V/krpm at 20 °C. These two numbers let you calculate the drive current needed for a given torque and the voltage headroom required at top speed. Stator resistance is 1.8 Ω and inductance is 13 mH — typical for a 2.5 kW frame, and the drive's current loop tuning will need those values for proper PI gains.
Mounting, cooling, and environmental sealing
The motor uses an international standard flange with a 100 mm square pilot diameter and a 95 mm centring collar. Four mounting holes at 9.0 mm diameter on the flange face — standard bolt pattern for this frame size. The shaft is 24 mm diameter with a parallel key, 50 mm shaft length, and an 8 mm key width. Centring collar depth is 3.5 mm, so the pilot registers positively into the mating bore before the bolts take the load. Cooling is by natural convection — no external fan or forced air. That means the continuous torque ratings assume free airflow around the motor body; mounting it in a confined space or against a heat source will require derating. Electrical connection is via a rotatable right-angled connector and a quick-lock straight connector — both are supplied, so you can orient the cable exit to suit the installation. The connector arrangement mates with the standard Hiperface DSL cable sets from Schneider's Lexium range.
The sizing reference is SH31004P, which is the base motor frame without the brake or connector options. The full order code SH31004P1BF3100 encodes the brake (B), the connector variant (F), and the encoder type (3100 for Hiperface DSL). If you already have a drive from the Lexium 28 or Lexium 32 family, the motor parameters are pre-loaded in the drive firmware — just enter the sizing reference and the drive auto-configures the current loop and encoder settings.
