The Schneider Electric TA10D2L0403TPE is an automatic transfer switch from the TransferPacT range, built to change the source of supply in a low-voltage distribution panel. It is rated for a continuous 40 A at 230 V AC, 50/60 Hz, in a 2-pole configuration, and carries an uninterrupted duty classification — meaning it is designed to hold the load indefinitely, not just during a switching event. This is a PC-class transfer switch per IEC 60947-6-1, which means it is intended for use in emergency power or backup generator circuits where the load must be transferred between two sources without interruption for load switching. It is not a CB-class device — there is no overcurrent protection built in; the upstream feeder breaker handles that.
The AC-33B utilization category covers mixed motor and resistive loads, including starting currents up to 8× rated for short periods, so this switch holds the unit on the grid for a panel feeding a mix of pumps, lighting, and small drives. Short-circuit performance is defined by two numbers: the rated short-time withstand current (Icw) of 5 kA for 0.1 s, and the rated short-circuit making capacity (Icm) of 15 kA when the switch-disconnector stands alone, or 75 kA when an upstream protection circuit breaker is coordinated.
The switch mounts fixed to a plate or DIN rail, with a connection pitch of 18 mm. The 310 mm width and 147 mm height mean it occupies a standard panel footprint — measure the backplate cutout before ordering, but it fits a typical 300 mm wide enclosure. Screwed connections on both the upside (line) and downside (load) sides accept copper conductors sized for 40 A. The mechanical interlocking between the two contactors prevents both sources from closing simultaneously, which is the fundamental safety requirement for any transfer switch.
Controls and status
Control is via four push-buttons on the front face, with an LCD screen for local status display. The switch supports both automatic and manual operating modes, selectable on the controller. Three contact positions are indicated: source 1, source 2, and OFF — the OFF position accepts a padlock for lockout/tagout. Signal contacts are configurable as 1 NO + 2 NC, 1 NC + 2 NO, or 2 NO, giving the controls integrator flexibility to wire remote status to a PLC or building management system. Mechanical durability is rated at 8000 cycles — that is the number of mechanical operations before wear-out, not the electrical life under load. For a backup generator transfer switch that cycles maybe 50 times a year, that is a 160-year service life. The suitability for isolation marking (yes) means the switch can be used as a visible-break disconnecting means, provided the load is de-energized before opening.
