Controller with integrated I/O for medium-complexity machines
The Schneider Electric Modicon M258 TM258LF66DT4L is a programmable logic controller that packs 66 discrete I/O and 4 analog inputs into a single DIN-rail-mounted unit. Counting inputs run at 200 kHz on 8 fast channels, making it a fit for applications that need high-speed encoder or pulse capture without a separate module. Supply voltage is 24 VDC nominal, with a range of 20.4 to 28.8 V. The rated power consumption is 18.11 W, so factor that into your 24 VDC budget. Outputs are sourced logic at 24 V, 4 mA per fast output — adequate for driving small solenoids or indicator loads direct, but plan for external relays if driving contactors or valves.
I/O map and fieldbus
10 fast input, 4 regular input, and 24 input; all configurable as sink or source. Fast inputs handle up to 200 kHz. Analog inputs accept 0...20 mA, 4...20 mA, or ±10 V. On the output side: 24 standard source outputs plus 4 fast source outputs. The fast outputs are rated 4 mA each — use them for PWM or short pulse trains. For higher current loads or inductive switching, buffer through a relay or solid-state output module. Communication options include CANopen at eight selectable bit rates from 10 kbit/s (5 km) up to 1 Mbit/s (4 m), plus Ethernet. Two dedicated LEDs per channel for I/O state, plus a full stack of system LEDs (CAN0 STS, MBS COM, Ethernet status, module status, battery). You get visual feedback without reaching for a handheld. The real-time clock drifts under 30 seconds per month without calibration, and can be tightened to ≤6 s/month with user calibration. That matters for timestamped events in process applications — but if you're synchronizing across multiple machines, plan for an NTP time master over Ethernet.
Memory and data retention
Flash memory is 128 MB, internal RAM 64 MB — enough for moderate application code and tag databases. Variables of type 'retain' and 'retain persistent' are backed by a CR2477M Renata battery with a retention life of 1.5 years at nominal conditions. That battery is user-replaceable, so schedule it into your preventive maintenance cycle.
Certifications include UL 508, CSA C22.2 No 142 and No 213, and IEC 61131-2. CE marked. That covers North American and European panel requirements for industrial control equipment.
Mounts on symmetrical DIN rail. Physical footprint: 10.3 in (262.5 mm) wide, 3.9 in (99 mm) tall, 3.3 in (85 mm) deep. That's a single-width rail space for 66 I/O — decent density. Rated for pollution degree 2 per IEC 60664, so suitable for ordinary factory floor environments without aggressive contaminants. Vibration resistance is 1 gn over 8.4–150 Hz on DIN rail, with 3.5 mm displacement at lower frequencies. Shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms. Storage altitude up to 3000 m, operating altitude to 2000 m. Relative humidity 5–95% non-condensing. These are standard industrial PLC specs — no special climate handling needed.
