The Schneider TM5SDM8TBFS is a safety discrete I/O module for the Modicon TM5 distributed I/O bus, carrying six sink inputs at 24 V DC and two source transistor outputs at 24 V DC into a single DIN-rail slice. It is built to safety-instrumented use: SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and IEC 62061, PL = e per EN 13849-1, with a PFD under 1E-5, PFH under 1E-9, and an MTTFd of 2500 years — the numbers that decide whether the device is acceptable on a safety loop at all. Form factor is the standard TM5 width — 25 mm wide, 75 mm deep, 99 mm tall — so it drops onto the same TM5 power distribution and bus segment as the rest of the slice I/O.
Inputs and outputs, in the loop
Inputs are sinking, draw 2.48 mA at 24 V DC from a 9.68 kOhm input impedance network, and read guaranteed logic 1 above 15 V and logic 0 below 5 V at the terminal — so the call-out voltage from a safety device or contact needs to clear those rails cleanly. Hardware input filtering is capped at 150 ms, which is the latency the safety calculation must absorb; if the upstream safety sensor (E-stop, guard interlock) is faster than this, it is harmless, but slow mechanical switches need to be evaluated against this floor. Outputs are two source 24 V DC transistor channels in the 20.4 to 28.8 V range — drive 24 V loads (contactors, signal lamps, small valve solenoids) sourcing current, not sinking it.

Pollution degree 2 and IP20 mean an enclosed cabinet or control room is mandatory; do not mount in a washdown or dusty-from-process location without a separate enclosure. Diagnostics on the door
Front-of-module LEDs split the diagnostics cleanly: one green LED per power supply rail, two red LEDs for safety status, two red/orange LEDs for each output channel, and six green/red LEDs for the input channels — so the field tech can read which leg of the safety circuit is not making without logging into the controller.
