Safety output module for Modicon TM5 — four channels, two amps each
The Schneider Electric TM5SDO4TAFS is a safety-rated discrete output module in the Modicon TM5 I/O platform. It provides four solid-state source outputs at 24 V DC, each rated for 2 A continuous with a peak of 12 A per channel. The module is designed for functional safety applications — MTTFd exceeds 100 years, PFD is below 1 × 10⁻⁵, and PFH is under 1 × 10⁻⁹, supporting SIL 2–3 and PL d–e architectures directly without external safety relays on the output bank.
Each channel switches at up to 500 Hz into a resistive load, fast enough for solenoid valve banks, indicator towers, and pneumatic pilot valves. The module stays operational from −10 °C to +55 °C in horizontal mounting, or up to +50 °C vertical. For a packaging machine, palletizer, or robot cell where the safety controller needs to cut power to guarded motion and hold a static safe state, this module is the output layer.
Regulatory and compliance
The TM5SDO4TAFS is UL listed (Industrial Control Equipment), carries the CE mark under the Machinery and Low Voltage Directives, and meets IEC 61508 SIL 2/3 and ISO 13849-1 PL e. If you are building a panel for North American delivery, the UL listing simplifies the field inspection — no separate component approval is needed for the output bank.
Integration notes for panel design
- Auxiliary power: The module draws logic power from the TM5 bus, but the output drivers need a separate 24 V DC supply wired to the power terminals. Size the external supply for 8 A continuous to cover all four channels at full load plus inrush headroom.
- Derating: Above 50 °C ambient (vertical mount), derate total output current by 10% per additional 5 °C. For horizontal mounting, the 55 °C rating is conservative — Schneider's own environmental test data supports 60 °C with forced convection if the enclosure has a fan.
- Diagnostics: Each channel reports open-load, short-circuit, and overtemperature status on the TM5 bus. Wire these diagnostic bits into your safety PLC's health monitoring routine; an open-load fault on a guard-door interlock solenoid needs to be flagged at the HMI, not just buried in the bus log.
Stock and ordering
We hold position stock on the TM5SDO4TAFS with same-day dispatch for quantities up to 50 pieces. For a full TM5 safety island (bus coupler, input module, output module, power distribution), send your BOM for a consolidated line-item quote — we pre-assemble and test the island on a DIN rail before shipping.
