The Schneider Altivar VW3A4572 is a three-phase line choke rated 428 A with 0.1 mH inductance, designed to reduce current harmonics on variable-speed drive inputs. It dissipates 495 W of thermal losses at full load and carries a 5 % maximum voltage drop at rated current. This is an open-frame (IP00) component — no enclosure, so it mounts inside a panel or cabinet where the terminals and windings are accessible for wiring with 13 mm diameter bare wires. The 385 mm width, 440 mm height, and 295 mm depth demand a generous backpanel footprint; plan for adequate clearance around the choke for airflow and the 5.5 mm minimum clearance distance per IEC 60664.
The 428 A rated current is the continuous RMS current the choke can carry without exceeding its thermal design. The saturation current of 770 A is the point where the core begins to saturate and inductance drops — a 1.8× margin over rated, which is typical for line chokes sized to handle drive inrush and transient overcurrent without losing harmonic attenuation. The 0.1 mH inductance is a relatively low value, suited for larger drives where the line impedance is already low and the choke's job is to knock down the dominant harmonic currents (typically 5th and 7th) rather than provide a high-inductance DC bus filter. It is a three-phase line choke, not a DC link reactor — install it on the input side of the drive, between the mains and the drive's rectifier. Thermal losses of 495 W mean this choke dumps nearly half a kilowatt of heat into the enclosure. That is not trivial — the panel's ventilation or cooling must handle that additional heat load, especially if the drive itself is also dissipating. The IP00 construction means no fan or enclosure is built in; the installer provides the airflow. Operating temperature range is 0 to 45 °C without derating, and 45 to 55 °C with a 2 % per °C derating on current. Altitude derating starts at 1000 m: 1 % per 100 m above that. If the installation is in a warm cabinet above 45 °C or at elevation, the 428 A rating must be reduced accordingly.
The choke is designed to EN 50178 (electronic equipment for power installations) and IEC 60076 (power transformers, with HD398). Pollution degree 2 per EN 50178 and a creepage distance of 11.5 mm per IEC 60664 mean it is rated for normal industrial environments with non-conductive pollution. Vibration resistance is 1 gn at 13–200 Hz and 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 3–13 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6; shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27. Insulation is Class F.
