What this filter does on the line side
The VW3A46116 is a passive filter that reduces current harmonics from Altivar variable speed drives. It sits between the line supply and the drive, reducing THDI to 10 % for drive sizes from 160 kW to 355 kW. Rated at 304 A input and 316 A output on a 400 V +/- 10 % three-phase network at 50 Hz, it handles the full-load current of the drives it pairs with. The 98 % efficiency figure means only 2 % of the power passing through is lost as heat — which at 925 W thermal losses is still enough to require ventilation clearance in the cabinet.
Sizing and quantity per drive
The filter can handle 1.5 times nominal current for 60 seconds, which covers short-duration overloads during motor acceleration. Ambient temperature derating kicks in above 45 °C: 3 % current reduction per °C up to 60 °C. Below 45 °C, no derating needed.
Installation and wiring
Wiring uses two terminal blocks: an A/B terminal for 2.5 mm² control connections, and an X1-1 through X2-3 terminal for 25 to 300 mm² power cable.
Beyond the harmonic standards (IEC 61000-2-2, IEC 61000-2-4, IEC 61000-3-12, IEC 61000-3-4, G5/4), the filter carries Class F insulation and operates across 5 to 45 °C without derating, with storage from -25 to 55 °C in original packaging. Relative humidity tolerance is 5 to 85 % without condensation. Altitude derating applies above 1000 m — 5 % per additional 1000 m up to 4000 m.
