The VW3A46118 is a passive filter from the Altivar accessory range, designed to reduce current harmonics on the line side of a variable speed drive. It's the part you add when the drive's own input harmonics would push the installation past the limits in IEC 61000-2-4 or G5/4. Rated for 400 V ±10 % three-phase, 50 Hz, it handles 395 A continuous on the output side and 380 A on the input side. THDI is held to 10 % for Altivar drives from 220 kW to 560 kW.

This is a panel-mount filter, IP20 in free air or IP55 when enclosed. The power terminals accept cable up to 300 mm². Ambient temperature range is 5 to 45 °C without derating; above that, derate 3 % per °C up to 60 °C. Mounting altitude above 1000 m also requires derating 5 % per 1000 m. The filter dissipates 1175 W of heat — that's not trivial, so factor that into your cabinet cooling calculation.

Efficiency and power factor behavior

Efficiency is listed at 98 %, so you're not burning much energy in the filter itself. The power factor (cos phi) varies with load: 0.99 at full load (100 % line current), 0.85 at 75 % load, and unity (1) at 150 % overload — that last one matters for the 60-second overload rating of 1.5× nominal current. The filter's Class F insulation handles the thermal stress during those overload events.
