The VW3A46164 is a passive filter designed to reduce current harmonics on the input side of Schneider Altivar variable-speed drives. Per the datasheet, it targets a THDI of 5 % for ATV61W, ATV650, ATV630, ATV950, and ATV930 drives at 22 kW / 30 hp, and 10 % for ATV61H, ATV71H, and ATV71W drives at the same power rating. That difference matters: if you're specifying for an ATV61H, the filter still brings line harmonics within IEC 61000-3-12 and G5/4 limits, but the residual THDI is higher than on the ATV630 family. Rated current is 37 A on the output side and 36 A on the input side, at 480 V +/-10 %, 60 Hz. The 1 A difference covers the filter's own magnetising current and losses. One filter per drive — no sharing across multiple units. Efficiency is listed at 98 %, with thermal losses of 396 W at full load. That heat has to go somewhere: the filter carries an IP20 rating in open mounting and IP55 when enclosed, so plan for panel ventilation or a separate enclosure if ambient temperature exceeds 45 °C. Above 45 °C, derate current by 3 % per °C up to 60 °C.
Harmonic performance and standards
The filter complies with IEC 61000-3-12, IEC 61000-2-2, IEC 61000-2-4, IEC 61000-3-2, and IEC 61000-3-4, plus the UK G5/4 engineering recommendation. That covers both European and UK grid-code harmonic limits for equipment connected to public low-voltage networks. The cos phi varies with load: 1.0 at 150 % line current, 0.99 at 100 %, and 0.85 at 75 %. That means at light load the filter draws slightly more reactive current — expected behaviour for a passive tuned stage. Overload capability is 1.5 x nominal current for 60 seconds — enough to ride through a motor start or a short-term load spike without nuisance tripping. The insulation class is F, and the operating altitude range extends to 4000 m with a 5 % current derating per 1000 m above 1000 m.
