The VW3A46165 is a passive harmonic filter for line-side installation on variable-speed drives, reducing current harmonics. It is rated for 48 A input and 50 A output at 480 V +/- 10 %, 60 Hz +/- 2 %, and is intended for one filter per drive on Altivar ATV630, ATV650, ATV930, and ATV950 units sized for 30 kW / 40 hp motors. The THDI performance varies by drive model: 10 % for ATV61H, ATV71H, and ATV71W, and 5 % for ATV61W, ATV630, ATV650, ATV930, and ATV950. That means on a 30 kW ATV630, the filter knocks harmonic distortion down to 5 % of fundamental — clean enough to meet IEC 61000-3-12 and G5/4 engineering recommendation limits without an active front end. Efficiency is 98 %, with 482 W of thermal losses to manage inside the enclosure. The filter is IP20 as standard, IP55 when enclosure-mounted, so plan for ventilation or derating if the panel runs hot.
Sizing and derating notes
Operating temperature range is 5 to 45 °C without derating; from 45 to 60 °C, derate current by 3 % per °C. Above 1000 m altitude, derate 5 % per additional 1000 m. The filter draws 48 A on the input side and passes 50 A to the drive — the 2 A difference covers filter losses and magnetising current. Terminals accept 1.5 to 25 mm² on the main power connections and 2.5 mm² on the control terminals. Vibration resistance is 2 mm peak-to-peak at 5-13.2 Hz and 0.7 gn at 13.2-150 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. Class F insulation (155 °C) gives headroom for the 482 W of self-heating. The power factor correction effect varies with load: cos phi is 1 at 150 % of line current, 0.99 at 100 %, and 0.85 at 75 % — meaning the filter presents a near-unity power factor to the line under normal load.
