Output filter for Altivar drives — dv/dt suppression at 759 A
The Schneider Electric VW3A5107 is a motor choke (output filter) for Altivar variable-speed drives, rated at 759 A continuous. It sits between the drive output and the motor cable, limiting the voltage rise rate (dv/dt) to protect motor insulation — 500 V/µs max at 400 V, 750 V/µs max at 500 V, and 1000 V/µs max at 690 V. That dv/dt clamping is what prevents reflected-wave damage on long cable runs, especially with IGBT drives. Thermal losses are 598 W at full rated current, which drives the ventilation requirement in the enclosure — a fan or forced-air path is expected given the IP00 / IP20 (with kit) construction. The choke is designed for a maximum drive output frequency of 100 Hz, so it suits standard induction motor applications up to that speed.
Cable length and integration notes
Maximum motor cable length depends on voltage and cable type: for 380–480 V drives powering 250–355 kW motors, the choke supports 200 m shielded or 250 m unshielded cable. For 500–690 V drives on 400–630 kW motors, it supports 150 m shielded or 250 m unshielded. The electrical connection uses a tag connector with 2 x M12 terminals — sized for the 759 A rating, so cable lug selection and torque values matter at installation.
