The VW3A5216 is a sinus output filter rated for 28 A continuous current, sized for Altivar Process variable speed drives. It cleans the PWM waveform from the drive output to a near-sinusoidal voltage, which reduces motor heating, eliminates reflected-wave stress on long cable runs, and quiets audible noise from the motor laminations. The 2 kHz switching frequency matches the typical IGBT carrier on many Altivar Process drives; if your drive runs a higher carrier, the filter still attenuates but derate the current per the drive's application note. The 70 Hz maximum output frequency means it suits standard induction motors up to 60 Hz base speed plus a small overspeed margin — not for high-speed spindle applications. UL 508 listing certifies it as an industrial control component for North American panels. The pollution degree 2 rating per EN 50178 means it's designed for normal factory-floor environments where only non-conductive dust settles — no condensation or conductive contamination expected.
Terminal electrical connection suits panel wiring with ring or fork terminals; no special connector tooling needed. Operating temperature range is -10 to 45 °C. Above 40 °C, the thermal losses of 280 W at 115 °C mean the panel must have adequate ventilation or forced cooling to keep the internal ambient below the limit. Storage range of -40 to 65 °C covers warehouse and shipping extremes. Altitude derating: rated at 1000 m; above that, derate current 1 % per 100 m up to 3000 m. At a 2000 m installation, that's a 10 % reduction — 25.2 A effective limit. Vibration resistance is 1 gn from 13 to 200 Hz, with 1.5 mm peak-to-peak from 3 to 13 Hz. Shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms. These are typical for panel-mounted industrial gear.
Overload and sourcing posture
The filter can handle 1.5 times nominal current for 60 seconds. This overload capability covers motor starting inrush and short-term process overloads without nuisance tripping or fuse coordination issues. For sustained overloads beyond 60 s, size up to the next filter rating.
