dv/dt Filter for Altivar Drives, 305 A
The Schneider Electric VW3A5307 is a dv/dt output filter for Altivar variable-speed drives, sized for drive ratings of 55 to 160 kW and a continuous 305 A. The 6000 V/µs max dv/dt rating at both 200–240 V and 380–480 V means it limits the voltage rise rate at the motor terminals, protecting winding insulation on long cable runs — a common issue with IGBT drives. The filter is rated for motor cable lengths up to 500 m unshielded or 300 m shielded, which covers most industrial motor runs without needing a reactor.
Mounting and Thermal Management
It measures 420 mm wide by 360 mm high by 270 mm deep — the depth dimension is the one that often catches specifiers out when fitting into existing cabinets. Electrical connection is via copper bar M10 terminals, accepting cable up to 300 mm² or 500 kcmil. Thermal losses are 287 W at a 4 kHz switching frequency; that heat must be ducted out of the enclosure, so factor it into the panel cooling budget.
Operating Conditions and Derating
Rated for ambient operation from -10 to 50 °C without derating, and up to 60 °C with a 1.5 % per °C derating above 50 °C. Altitude derating starts at 1000 m — 1 % per 100 m up to 4000 m. The maximum drive output frequency is 100 Hz, so this filter is suited for standard induction motor applications, not high-speed spindles.
