What this filter does on the line
The VW3A5407 is an output sinus filter for Altivar variable-speed drives, sized for a 305 A continuous rating at 480 V AC. It converts the PWM output from the drive into a near-sinusoidal waveform, which means the motor sees cleaner voltage — less stress on the winding insulation and lower bearing currents. The filter is rated for a maximum output frequency of 100 Hz, so it covers standard induction motors and most high-speed spindle applications up to that limit. At 4 kHz switching frequency, the filter dissipates 676 W of thermal losses. That heat has to go somewhere — the IP00 enclosure means it's not sealed; it relies on free air or forced ventilation in the cabinet. Plan for that heat load in your panel thermal budget, especially if the filter shares an enclosure with other heat-generating gear.
Mounting and connection — what fits where
The filter measures 565 mm deep by 460 mm wide by 370 mm tall. That's a substantial footprint — verify the backplate or floor-mount area before committing the panel layout. Electrical connection is via M10 copper bars, accepting cable up to 300 mm² or 500 kcmil. That's a heavy lug; torque the M10 bolts to the manufacturer's spec for the bar material. Motor cable length can run up to 1000 m with unshielded cable, or 500 m with shielded. That range covers long conveyor lines or pump stations where the drive sits in a central MCC room and the motor is out on the plant floor. The IP00 rating means it's for indoor cabinet installation only — no washdown, no outdoor exposure.
Environmental and derating reality
The filter operates without derating from -15 °C to 50 °C ambient. Above 50 °C up to 60 °C, derate the current by 1.5 % per °C. At altitude above 1000 m up to 4000 m, derate 1 % per 100 m. The 3M4 shock and vibration class per IEC 60721-3-3 covers normal industrial transport and installation, not extreme mobile or marine environments. The filter also carries environmental resistance ratings: biological class 3B1, chemical class 3C3, and dust class 3S3 per IEC 60721-3-3. That 3C3 chemical rating is significant — it means the filter can handle moderate chemical exposure, like what you'd find in a wastewater treatment hall or a chemical dosing area, without the enclosure degrading.
