What the enclosure rating means for your line
The XCKL521 carries a NEMA 1/2/4/6/6P/12/13 and IP66 enclosure rating, which means it handles hose-down washdown, temporary submersion (NEMA 6P), and dust-tight service without an external cover box. In a food plant or outdoor conveyor line, that rating saves the cost of a separate enclosure. The ZAMAK zinc alloy body resists corrosion better than painted steel in wet environments, but it is not stainless — keep it away from concentrated caustic wash chemicals that attack zinc.
Contact ratings — where the 3 A AC limit matters
Rated 240 VAC at 3 A and 250 VDC at 0.27 A. The AC rating is for pilot-duty control circuits (contactors, relays, PLC inputs), not for switching motor loads directly — the 3 A limit at 240 V means it handles a typical 0.75 kW contactor coil but not a motor line. The DC rating at 0.27 A is the one that catches people out: inductive DC loads like brake coils or solenoid valves need a flyback diode or the contacts wear fast. The SPDT 1NO-1NC slow make/break configuration is standard for safety interlock circuits where the NC channel provides a positive-break signal to the safety relay. The slow-break action means the contacts open at the speed of the lever motion, not a snap-action spring — this reduces bounce but increases arcing time on DC.
Mechanical stroke and actuator direction
Pretravel is 4.6 mm and total travel is 7.6 mm — the lever moves through about 60% of its stroke before the contacts switch, then has 3 mm of overtravel after switching. Budget the full 7.6 mm in the cam or dog profile so the actuator does not bottom out against the switch body. The one-way thermoplastic roller lever actuates only when the cam approaches from the roller side; reverse travel does not operate the switch. This is typical for rotary cam chains where the switch detects motion in one direction only. The thermoplastic roller is quieter than metal on steel cams but wears faster in high-cycle applications above 100 operations per minute.
Sourcing and lifecycle reality
Connection is via a 1/2 inch NPT conduit entry — no integral connector, so factor in a cord grip or conduit fitting. The operating temperature range of -13 to 158 °F (-25 to 70 °C) covers most indoor and outdoor installations but not freezer or oven applications. Approvals include UL and CSA, plus compliance with EN/IEC 60204-1 (machine safety) and EN/IEC 60947-5-1 (control circuit devices).
