What this M8 shielded sensor does on the line
The XS108B3PBM8 is a Schneider Electric XS1 series inductive proximity sensor in an M8 threaded cylindrical body, shielded face, with a 3 mm sensing distance on mild steel. The shielded construction means it can be flush-mounted into a metal bracket or machine frame without false triggering from the surrounding metal — a common requirement when the sensor pocket is drilled into a steel mounting block. Output is PNP normally-closed (NC), rated 200 mA maximum load current at 12–24 VDC. The NC configuration is typical for fail-safe monitoring: if the sensor loses power or the target leaves range, the output opens, signalling the condition to the PLC or safety relay. Per the datasheet, the sensor includes overload, reverse polarity, and short circuit protection — so a miswire or a stalled output won't immediately kill the device. The M8 connector (3-pin, direct connector installation) mates with standard M8 cordsets. The stainless steel 303 body with nickel plating handles the washdown and vibration common on packaging and material-handling lines. IP65/IP67 rating means the electronics are sealed against hose-directed water and temporary immersion — appropriate for food-grade washdown zones as long as the mating cordset is also rated.
