What lands on the bench
The Telemecanique Sensors XS1N05PA311S is an 8 mm threaded cylindrical inductive proximity sensor in the XS1 series, built around a shielded stainless 303 body with an M8 direct connector and a 42 mm overall height — the same miniature footprint used across the XS1 miniature line for high-density detection on small tooling and packaging machinery. Sensing is inductive and shielded, with a maximum sensing distance of 1 mm — meaning the target has to come inside that 1 mm window for a clean switch, and the shielded face allows flush-mounting in metal without derating the headroom. The output is a 3-wire PNP normally-open contact form, powered from a 5-24V DC supply, which makes the part a direct fit for the sourcing input cards on most modern PLCs and the positive-switching logic that controls solenoid valves, small relays, and indicator stacks.
Electrical I/O and what it means on the panel
Supply is rated 5-24V DC only — there is no AC rating on this device, so a transformer-fed 24 VAC control circuit will not power it and the field-side PSU must be a DC source. The PNP NO 3-wire format means the brown lead (typically +V), blue lead (0V), and black output (loads to +V when the target is sensed) — the wiring convention a controls integrator plugs into a positive-switching PLC input or into a relay coil with the return on the blue lead. Both overload protection and short-circuit protection are listed on the device, which is the standard XS1 in-built self-protection that lets the sensor survive a wiring error or a stalled output without dropping the whole machine to a faulted state.
Connector, indication, and mechanical envelope
Connection is an M8 direct connector on a 3-pin body, with the indicator light built in — the same M8 patch cord pattern used across the rest of the miniature XS line, so a single 3-pin M8 lead (right-angle or straight) covers both this sensor and the matching NO/NC variants on the machine. The 8 mm threaded barrel with 42 mm overall length is the standard XS1 form factor: drop-in mount in an M8 through-hole, lock with a pair of jam nuts, and the shielded face lets the barrel sit flush in a metallic bracket.
Environment and the body around it
The housing is IP67 stainless 303, rated for operating temperatures from -13 °F to 158 °F, so the sensor survives washdown, coolant splash, and the high-ambient pockets inside a control panel — the go-anywhere body for food-and-bev, pharma skid, and general outdoor machinery. Compliance listing covers CE, CSA, and UL Listed — sufficient for machinery going into North American and European OEM panels without a separate component-level approval cycle.
