What this proximity sensor is for
The XS212BLPAL2 is a cylindrical inductive proximity sensor from the Telemecanique XS2 series, built for detecting metal targets without contact. It uses a 12 mm threaded brass barrel with nickel-plated finish, rated IP67 and NEMA 4X, so it handles washdown environments, coolant splash, and dust on machine tools, conveyors, and packaging lines. Output is PNP normally open, switching up to 200 mA at 12-24 V DC, with a 4 mm unshielded sensing face. The 4 mm range means it detects a metal target at roughly one-third of the sensor diameter — standard for an unshielded M12 inductive. The unshielded (non-flush) design allows a slightly longer sensing distance than a shielded version but requires space around the face for the field to radiate; don't bury it in a steel block.
Three-wire prewired cable, 2 m length, bare ends. Strip and terminate to a PNP DC input card or PLC. The supply range is 12-24 V DC — no AC models, so verify your control voltage. An integral LED indicator gives local status; useful when commissioning or troubleshooting a position-sense point. The M12 threaded body mounts through a 12 mm hole. The 44 mm overall height leaves room for a cable bend in a junction box.
Operating temperature range is -13 °F to +158 °F. IP67 and NEMA 4X ratings mean it is sealed against dust ingress and temporary immersion.
