What it is, in the bin
The Square D XS2M08MA230 is an 8 mm tubular inductive proximity sensor in the Telemecanique XS line, unshielded threaded barrel, 2-wire normally-open output on a 2 m PVC pigtail — the small-barrel workhorse MRO slot for non-flush mounting where space is tight and a compact target has to be detected. Operating envelope runs 12 to 240 VAC or 24 to 210 VDC, output switches up to 100 MILLIAMPERE. Switching frequency is 25 HZ on AC and 3000 HZ on DC, which is the figure that decides fit on a high-cycle line: DC-powered applications keep full count rate, AC-powered ones are limited to 25 Hz — match the supply to the application, not the other way around.
Environment and mechanical fit
Enclosure rating is NEMA 3/4X/6P/12/13 plus IP67, and the operating temperature window is -13 TO 176 DEG F, so the sensor is rated for washdown and outdoor panels without derating; the nickel-plated brass body with PBT sensing face takes the chemical exposure typical of food & beverage and process skid duty. Sensing distance is 2.5 MM on an unshielded barrel, so it must be mounted with clear space around the face (non-flush) — a flush-mounted bracket that worked for a shielded M12 will not give this M8 the same range, and the bracket choice has to match.
Approvals on record
Agency approvals on the label are UL, CSA, CE — that is the panel-builder's submission packet covered for North American and EU machinery; no RoHS, REACH, or IECEx statement is present in the technical description, so for any zone-classified or material-compliance declaration beyond the three listed marks, request it from the compliance file before shipping.
