What this sensor is and what it does
The Telemecanique XS508B1DAM12 is a cylindrical, shielded inductive proximity sensor from the XS5 series. It detects ferrous targets up to 2 mm away, outputs a 2-wire DC NO signal at 12–48 V DC, and handles up to 100 mA load current. The stainless steel 303 body is nickel plated, rated IP67 and NEMA 4X, so it handles washdown and oily environments. The built-in M12 connector keeps wiring clean — no cable gland needed. An amber LED tells you the output state, which saves a meter check at startup.
Comparing to the block-style XS8D1A1MAU20
A buyer asking if the XS508B1DAM12 can replace an XS8D1A1MAU20: no, not without rework. The XS8 is a rectangular PBT block with a 60 mm unshielded sensing range and AC/DC supply (24–240 V). The XS508 is an 8 mm cylindrical shielded sensor with 2 mm range and DC-only. Different form factor, different mounting bracket, different connection (M12 vs U20 connector). If your BOM lists a block sensor, this cylinder won't drop in — but if you need a tight-spot inductive where range under 2 mm works, the XS508 can be a clean replacement.
