What this sensor is and what it does
The XS508B1PBL2 is a 13 mm cylindrical inductive proximity sensor from the Telemecanique XS5 series, designed to detect ferrous and non-ferrous metal targets at a rated distance of 2 mm when shielded for flush mounting. Output is PNP normally closed (NC) — the signal line goes high when no target is present and switches low on detection. Supply range is 12-24 V DC, drawn through a 3-wire prewired cable, 2 m long, terminated bare wire. Built with a 303 stainless steel body, the sensor carries an IP67 rating, meaning it withstands dust ingress and temporary immersion. An integral indicator light confirms power and output state. The part includes overload, reverse polarity, and short circuit protection on the output — these protections reduce the risk of damage from wiring mistakes or transient faults, which is a practical advantage when sourcing for high-mix lines where wiring discipline varies. Use cases are standard for a shielded inductive proximity sensor: end-of-travel detection on pneumatic cylinders, part-presence sensing on conveyor pallets, cam detection on rotary tables, and any position feedback where the target approaches the sensor face repeatedly. The shielded construction allows mounting flush in metal brackets or panels without derating the sensing distance.
Integration notes
13 mm shielded body for flush mounting; 2 m bare-wire cable; 3-wire PNP NC output at 12-24 V DC. IP67-rated stainless steel 303 sensor, operating temperature -13 to +158 °F.
