The 40 A AC rating is the continuous current-carrying capacity at 40 °C ambient; derate to 37.2 A at 45 °C, 36 A at 50 °C, and 32 A at 70 °C. The 30 mA trip is standard for personnel protection (shock hazard) per IEC 60364. Type A detection catches sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC residual currents — common in single-phase rectified loads like switching power supplies and LED drivers. The 3-pole construction handles three-phase circuits; the neutral is not switched through the device (requires a separate neutral bar).
