CPU 222 — compact control for distributed I/O
The Siemens 6ES7212-1BB23-0XB0 is the S7-200 CPU 222, a compact PLC with 8 digital inputs and 6 relay outputs, powered by 24 VDC (20.4 V to 28.8 V permissible range) or 100 V to 230 V AC. It programs in LAD, FBD, or STL and communicates via MPI (as a slave) or PPI at 19.2/187.5 kbit/s. The built-in RS-485 port handles program uploads, HMI panels like the TD 200, and CPU-to-CPU data exchange within the S7-200 network.
What the I/O and counters mean on the line
The 8 inputs are source/sink configurable per group and include four 30 kHz high-speed counters (32-bit, up/down, with interrupt on setpoint) that can handle two incremental encoders with 90° offset pulse trains at up to 20 kHz. That means this CPU can track a conveyor position or count fast parts without an external counter module. The 6 relay outputs switch up to 10 ms on/off and handle 30 W DC or 200 W AC lamp loads — enough for direct control of small contactors or pilot lights in a panel.
Memory backup that survives a wet-well power blip
Program and DB1 are stored on integral EEPROM — no battery needed for the program. Current DB1 values, retentive bits, timers, and counters are buffered by a high-performance capacitor that holds data for at least 8 hours at 40 °C (50 h max). An optional battery module extends that to 200 days typical. In a lift station where power can flicker for hours, the capacitor gives you enough hold time to ride through the outage without losing the pump alternation sequence.
