Type 2 surge arrester for 400 V distribution boards
The Schneider Electric A9L65301 is an Acti9 iPRD65r Type 2 surge arrester in a 3-pole (3P) configuration, rated for 400 V AC (+/- 10 %) at 50/60 Hz distribution networks. This is a current-production part (lifecycle stage: current). The unit uses a hybrid MOV + GDT (Metal Oxide Varistor plus Gas Discharge Tube) technology, which reduces leakage current and extends service life compared to MOV-only designs. The pluggable cartridge means the active protection element can be replaced without rewiring the base — a practical advantage during commissioning or after a severe surge event.
Discharge ratings and protection levels
Nominal discharge current (In) is 20 kA per mode (L/PE, N/PE, L/N), and maximum discharge current (Imax) is 65 kA per mode. The voltage protection level (Up) is <1.5 kV for both common and differential modes — this is the let-through voltage the protected equipment sees. For a Type 2 device installed at the sub-distribution board, that keeps downstream equipment within typical impulse withstand ratings. Maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) is 350 V L/PE and L/N, and 260 V N/PE. Temporary overvoltage (Ut) withstand is 337 V L/N for 5 seconds; the N/PE path is rated for 1200 V for 200 ms in safe failure mode — relevant for TN-C and IT earthing systems (the arrester is explicitly listed for TN-C IT 230 V systems).
Integration and disconnector coordination
The iPRD65r requires an upstream overcurrent protective device. The manufacturer specifies associated circuit breakers: IC60N, iC60H, NG125N, NG125H, or NG125L, all 50 A curve C, or a gG 80 A fuse. The disconnector type is listed as 'associated circuit breaker' or 'associated fuse' — the installer must select one from the table to ensure coordination and to avoid the arrester becoming a fault path. Tunnel-type terminals accept 2.5 to 35 mm² conductors on both the line and load sides; tightening torque is 2.5 N·m. Remote signalling is provided via a changeover contact (1 SD, 1 C/O) rated at 0.25 A / 250 V AC. This allows the arrester's end-of-life or disconnected state to be monitored by a PLC or building management system — useful for panels where visual inspection is impractical.
Relative humidity tolerance is 5 to 95 %. Maximum operating altitude is 2000 m. The enclosure carries an IK03 impact rating per IEC 62262. Certified to EN 61643-11:2012 and IEC 61643-11:2011, with KEMA-KEUR and NF marks. Ground residual current is 0.6 mA and 0.003 mA.
