Medium-voltage drive, not a 480 V VFD
The ATV1200A56504242: This is a medium-voltage drive with supply voltage limits of 2970 to 3630 V — it is not a standard 480 V VFD. Rated motor power is 4723 kW with an apparent power of 5650 kVA, placing it squarely in large MV drive territory for high-horsepower synchronous or asynchronous motors. The input stage uses a 24-pulse diode rectifier bridge, which inherently cancels the 5th and 7th harmonics without an active front end. This makes it suitable for sites with strict harmonic limits (IEEE 519) where a multi-pulse transformer is already part of the installation.
Physical footprint and cooling
The drive ships in a floor-standing enclosure with separate air flows for power and control sections. Dimensions are 6670 mm wide by 2740 mm high by 1800 mm deep (standard efficiency variant) — this requires a dedicated equipment room with adequate floor space and overhead clearance for cable entry from the bottom or top. Cooling is forced convection, moving 70,000 m³/h of air. The noise level is 80 dB — hearing protection is necessary in the drive room during operation.
Overload capability and fault withstand
The drive offers two overload profiles: standard overload handles 1.2× In for 60 seconds and 1.5× In for 3 seconds; high overload handles 1.5× In for 60 seconds and 1.85× In for 3 seconds. This covers both normal starting duty and high-torque applications like crushers or mills. Prospective line short-circuit current withstand is 31.5 kA for 150 ms — this sets the SCCR for upstream protection coordination. Ground fault protection is integrated into the drive.
The drive is CE marked and complies with EN/IEC 60204-11 (machinery safety), EN/IEC 60529 (enclosure protection), EN/IEC 61800-3 (EMC for adjustable-speed drives), EN/IEC 61800-4 (general requirements), and EN/IEC 61800-5-1 (electrical safety). Electrical isolation between power and control is provided. Dielectric strength is 20 kV AC between earth and power terminals.
