The TM3DQ16U is a 16-channel transistor output module in the Modicon TM3 family (current production); each channel sinks 300 mA at 24 V DC (negative logic) with voltage drop under 0.4 V. Typical backplane consumption is 5 mA at 5 V and 10 mA at 24 V.
Sink (negative) logic means the output switches the low side; the load connects between +24 V DC and the output terminal, a wiring convention standard for European PLC systems. The 300 mA per channel is suitable for pilot lights, small solenoid valves, and interface relays; for larger contactor coils, an interposing relay is needed. Response time is 450 µs typical for both turn-on and turn-off — fast enough for basic sequencing and batch step transitions in a brewery CIP skid, but not a high-speed counter or a positional servo output. Use this on the discrete valve manifold or pump start signals; keep the fast counter inputs on the CPU or a dedicated high-speed module. Isolation between each channel and the bus is rated at 500 V AC.
Mounting, wiring, and environmental limits
The module clips onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail (TH35-15 or TH35-7.5) with no tools; dimensions are 21.4 mm wide, 90 mm tall, 81.3 mm deep. The removable screw terminal block accepts AWG 26 to AWG 16 and has a 3.81 mm pitch. Cable distance from the module to the field device must stay under 30 m for unshielded cable. In a brewery expansion project where valve manifolds are scattered across the plant floor, plan the I/O drop locations accordingly. Operating temperature range is –10 to 55 °C in horizontal mounting, or –10 to 35 °C if mounted vertically; derate in warm panels near boiler houses. Each output has a green LED for status indication — essential for commissioning and troubleshooting a 16-point bundle. The module carries CE marking and complies with IEC 61131-2; pollution degree 2 is fine for dry control rooms but not for direct washdown zones (IP20 only).
