How Siemens 3VA20 MCCBs Replace Aging Legacy Breakers Without Rewiring Your Panel

The Siemens 3VA20 is a molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) line covering 16 A to 630 A with breaking capacities from 25 kA to 70 kA at 415 V. It is the fixed-pattern, non-adjustable tier within the 3VA family — if the 3VA27 is the fully-loaded version with LCD displays and communication modules, the 3VA20 is the stripped-down workhorse that does the same core job for 30-40% less cost. You are paying for the trip unit and the frame, not the extras.

Where these go in practice: 3VA20 breakers land in motor control centers feeding 37 kW to 250 kW induction motors, in main distribution boards for commercial high-rises (typically 250 A frame for floor-level distribution), and downstream of VFDs on pump and compressor skids where a breaker needs to interrupt fault current without nuisance tripping on inrush. They are also common in solar combiner boxes on commercial rooftops — the 160 A frame with 36 kA interrupting rating handles DC-side faults on strings up to 1000 V.

The spec table that matters:

ParameterAvailable rangeWhat to watch for
Rated current (In)16–630 AFrame sizes: 160 A, 250 A, 400 A, 630 A
Breaking capacity (Icu)25 kA, 36 kA, 55 kA, 70 kAAt 415 V AC; derate for higher voltages
Trip unitTMTU (thermal-magnetic, fixed)No electronic adjustment — if you need LSI curves, step up to 3VA27
Poles3-pole, 4-pole4-pole for switched neutral or TN-S isolation
Rated voltageUp to 690 V AC / 500 V DCDC ratings exist but current derating is steep — check the datasheet
AccessoriesShunt trip, undervoltage release, auxiliary + alarm contactsPre-wired kits available; field-installable without voiding warranty

Picking the right variant: Start from the available fault current at the installation point, not from the load current. A 250 A frame with 25 kA Icu on a busbar sitting 3 meters from a 2 MVA transformer with 5% impedance will see roughly 55 kA prospective fault current — that 25 kA unit will not survive the first fault. Size the breaking capacity first, then pick the frame current above your continuous load plus 25% headroom for thermal aging. If the panel has existing Siemens Sentron-series breakers, the 3VA20 shares the same busbar mounting footprint — a drop-in swap in most cases.

Vs alternatives: Against the Schneider Compact NSXm (the direct competitor in the 16–160 A segment), the 3VA20 typically wins on lead time in EMEA markets (Siemens stocks these across European DCs; NSXm availability varies by distributor). The Eaton NZM2 is price-competitive but lacks the same accessory ecosystem — Siemens offers over 200 plug-in accessory combinations for the 3VA platform. On the flip side, ABB's Tmax XT3 includes a basic LCD for phase-current display at roughly the same 3VA20 price point, which matters for troubleshooting in the field.

Procurement notes: The 3VA20 is not a long-lead item for standard frame sizes and ratings — most distributors hold stock. Frame breakers with 70 kA Icu or DC-rated units can push to 6–8 weeks. When ordering, specify the trip unit rating exactly; the thermal-magnetic TMTU is factory-fitted and swapping it later means swapping the entire breaker. If you need selectable overload and short-time delay settings, stop looking at this series and go straight to the 3VA27.
